A few links and words from Mike Brey

LATE IN THE day but here are a couple of links from today’s JI.

UConn pounds DePaul as Daniels heats up

Notebook: DePaul plays short-handed

— ALSO, NOTRE DAME coach Mike Brey spoke to the media Wednesday, including some folks from Connecticut.

The Huskies and Irish play Saturday afternoon in South Bend, Ind.

Here are a couple of Brey’s comments:

Brey’s guards, Jerian Grant and Eric Atkins, have been playing great and the coach says they might be the best in the nation.

“I don’t feel there’s any backcourt better than them,” Brey said. “They’re as good as any of them out there, the way they’ve been playing.”

Notre Dame (14-1) has won 12 straight games. Part of the reason for that run is the Irish lead the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio.

“I think they’ve been a little under the radar, for a lot of reasons,” Brey added of Grant and Atkins. “But their efficiency right now, with what they’re doing on the offensive end, is off the charts.”

— THE MATCHUP BETWEEN Grant/Atkins and Shabazz Napier/Ryan Boatright should be a fun one.

“It’s a great matchup. These two guys (Napier and Boatright) are really good, and I think our guys love those challenges,” Brey said.

Brey had plenty of praise for UConn’s duo as well.

“I’m so impressed with how Napier and Boatright are playing right now,” Brey said. “They really make them go.”

— BREY SAID UCONN did well to hire Kevin Ollie for the long haul.

“I’m really thrilled that they decided to invest in him,” Brey said. “The players love him. You can tell the kids on the team love him.”

“He walks that line of being able to be close to them but yet being the coach and getting on their backsides extremely well,” Brey added.
