Cronin talks Huskies

It’s going to be tough for me to get to Cincinnati tomorrow, and for the Huskies too, because of all this snow.

But we did have a chance to talk to Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin this afternoon about his team’s game against UConn Thursday night.

Here are the highlights:

— CRONIN HAD PLENTY of praise for Shabazz Napier, of course.

“Shabazz is one of the best players, if not the best guard that we’ll play against all year,” Cronin said.

But if there’s a player of the year in the AAC so far, Cronin’s of course going with his guy, Sean Kilpatrick.

“To win a league or to compete for a league title you have to have a couple all-league players,” Cronin said. “We have Sean Kilpatrick and Justin Jackson. If the voting were done today I think one would be player of the year in the league and the other defensive player of the year. But we’ve got a long way to go and Shabazz Napier will have something to say about that.”

— THE BEARCATS HAVE won 14 straight and are up No. 7 in the country. What’s the key?

“In close games, we have an All-American guard that has made the plays and the free throws on offense. You combine with that our collective effort to get stops on the defensive end…You combined those two things and you’re going to win a lot of games.”

— CRONIN, FOR ONE, hopes that UConn F DeAndre Daniels (ankle) plays Thursday night.

“I hope he plays. I’m a big karma guy. I believe in rooting for kids and positive energy. I hope he’s OK and able to play healthy and play well,” Cronin said. “Absolutely we’ll prepare for him to play.”
